Job Purpose & Accountabilities

Reporting to the Director, Communications and Public Relations, the Science Communications Associate executes strategies, frameworks, and plans through a variety of tactics.

Acting as a team member with a varied and powerful toolkit of skills, the Science Communications Associate is vital for the success of the accountabilities of the Marketing and Communications Team, with a dedicated focus on

  • Communicating Thought Leadership and Scientific Excellence

As part of the role, the Science Communications Associate will work to explain the latest scientific findings and discoveries, cover conferences, interview scientists, and be called upon to translate highly technical research papers into general English for mass consumption by the public. In addition, the work of the Science Communications Associate will focus on raising the public profile of Amii researchers and the science community, supporting the recruitment of researchers and students into the Alberta AI ecosystem, and proactively identifying opportunities to showcase and share the connection between real-world examples of applied AI to fundamental research.

In addition, the Science Communications Associate undertakes specific, but limited, planning and advisory roles when opportunities arise that are aligned with their skillset and growth plans.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in communications, marketing and, public relations or journalism
  • 2+years of hands-on experience in social media management, content management systems
  • Post-secondary degree in communications, public relations or journalism (or in other related areas with an after degree/diploma in communications, public relations or journalism)
  • Demonstrated experience in science communication translating technical knowledge into general English, or a post-secondary degree in science, technology or science communication.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of communications best practices
