The AI Seminar is a weekly meeting at the University of Alberta where researchers interested in artificial intelligence (AI) can share their research. Presenters include both local speakers from the University of Alberta and visitors from other institutions. Topics can be related in any way to artificial intelligence, from foundational theoretical work to innovative applications of AI techniques to new fields and problems.
On April 29, Bill Leslie (Professor of Medicine and Radiology at the University of Manitoba) and Barrett Monchka (MSc Student in Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba) presented "Automated Vertebral Fracture Recognition from Clinical Images."
The talk explores their experience with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to automate vertebral fracture recognition in order to help radiologists give better care to patients with osteoporosis. Vertebral fracture diagnosis is difficult even for experts radiologists, but it is integral for patient care. The subtle features lead to underdiagnosis, but may also be mimicked leading to overdiagnosis. CNNs can act as a new tool for physicians to improve their ability to provide a diagnosis.
